These terms cover your use of astn.io, my personal website, its comment system, and the gist site at gist.astn.io. I’m Austin Hagel, and “I” and “me” here mean me. By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
How I handle your information is covered separately in the Privacy Policy.
My content
The writing, images, designs and other work on this site are mine unless they say otherwise, and I keep the rights to them. You’re welcome to link to anything here, and to quote short parts of it with credit and a link back.
- Code in posts and guides: you’re free to use code snippets from my blog posts and guides in your own projects, with or without credit.
- My gists: gists I post on gist.astn.io, including ones embedded in posts, are covered by the license they name. If one doesn’t name a license, you can use it like code in posts. Gists posted by other people belong to them, as described below.
- Projects: a project that names its own license, like an open-source repository, is covered by that license instead. Some design projects were made for clients or organizations, who may own the work. It’s shown here as part of my portfolio.
- Downloads: files offered for download are for personal use and reference, unless the project says otherwise. Please don’t resell them or pass them off as your own.
- Other people’s work: fonts, icons, libraries and other material made by others belong to their creators and are credited on the Attributions page.
Comments
You can comment on posts, projects and notes, either anonymously or by signing in with an account from a provider like Google or GitHub.
Ground rules
Keep comments respectful and on topic. Don’t post anything that:
- harasses, threatens or demeans anyone, or attacks people based on who they are
- is spam, advertising, or links to scams or malware
- is illegal, or infringes someone else’s copyright or other rights
- shares someone’s private information without their permission
- pretends to be someone else
Moderation
It’s my site, so I can edit, hide or delete any comment, and block anyone from commenting, at my discretion, with or without notice. I’m not able to review every comment, and I’m not obliged to keep any comment up.
Your comments
You’re responsible for what you post, and comments are the opinions of the people who wrote them, not mine. You keep ownership of your comments. By posting one, you give me permission to store it and show it on this site, and to keep showing it until you or I delete it.
Signing in
Signing in uses your account with a third-party provider, so that provider’s own terms also apply. You’re responsible for anything posted from your account.
Gists
gist.astn.io is where code snippets and small files are shared. It runs Opengist, open-source software that I host on my own server, and anyone can make an account there to post gists of their own. Some of my posts embed gists from it or link to them.
Your account
You need to be at least 13 to make an account. You sign in with GitHub, so GitHub’s own terms also apply. You’re responsible for your account and anything posted from it, so keep your GitHub account secure. Don’t make accounts to post spam or to get around a block. An account here is separate from signing in to comments, and I may close sign-ups at any time.
What you can post
The ground rules for comments apply to gists too, including their titles, descriptions and your profile. Also don’t post:
- malware, or code meant to break into or damage systems you don’t have permission to test
- other people’s passwords, keys or private data
- large files, backups or anything else that uses the site as general file storage
- code or files you don’t have the right to share
Who can see your gists
Each gist is public, unlisted or private:
- Public gists are listed on the site, and anyone can view, download, fork or embed them.
- Unlisted gists aren’t listed, but anyone with the link can do the same. Treat them as public.
- Private gists can only be seen by you on the site.
As the person running the server, I can technically see everything stored on it, including private gists. I won’t look at them except to keep the site running, to deal with abuse, or when the law requires it. Even so, don’t use gists to store passwords, keys or anything else sensitive.
Your gists and licenses
You keep ownership of your gists. By posting one, you give me permission to store it, back it up and show it on gist.astn.io. For public and unlisted gists, you also let other people view, download, fork and embed them using the site’s features.
If you want people to be able to use your code beyond that, say so by including a license in the gist. If you don’t, you keep all other rights to it.
Deleting a gist removes it from the site, but forks and copies that others have already made may remain.
Using other people’s gists
Gists posted by other people are theirs, not mine. I don’t review them before they’re posted, and I’m not responsible for them. Check a gist’s license before you reuse it, and read any code before you run it.
If you find a gist that breaks these rules, or that uses your work without permission, let me know through the contact page.
Moderation
As with comments, I can edit, hide or delete any gist, and suspend or delete any account, at my discretion, with or without notice.
The site isn’t a backup service. Gists may be lost, and I may change or shut down the site at any time, so keep your own copies of anything you care about.
Guides and advice
My guides, posts and code are shared to be helpful, but they’re for general information only. They may contain mistakes or go out of date. Test things yourself and keep backups before you change anything important. You use them at your own risk.
Links to other sites
This site links to other websites. I don’t control them and I’m not responsible for their content or how they handle your data.
No warranty
The site and everything on it are provided “as is”, without any warranty. I can’t promise it will always be available, accurate or free of errors, and I may change or remove anything on it at any time.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, I’m not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using this site, its content, its comments or its gists, including any indirect or consequential loss.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA. Any dispute about them will be handled by the state or federal courts located in Washington.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms from time to time. When I do, I’ll change the date at the top of this page. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
